Rural Lifestyle

India Rural Tours offers special packages to Purushwadi, a village located close to Igatpuri and about 250 Kms from Mumbai. The village is located at an altitude of 1000 Mts above sea level, and the climate is pleasant throughout the year. The village is rich in folklore and is inhabited mostly by tribals such as the Bhils, Koli Mahadeos, Warlis etc. Warli Art has a rich tradition. A warli painting is visible on this website.

Getting there:
250 km by road, from both Mumbai and Pune, with national highways for more than 60% of the journey. Route from Mumbai: Drive along the Eastern Express Highway to Igatpuri via the Thane Check Naka. At Igatpuri, turn towards Nasik. From here on you will pass through Goti-Bhandardara-Rajur-Purushwadi.

India Rural Tours can organize buses or cars as required.

Alternatively, a visitor may also travel by train to Kasara. India Rural Tours will then make arrangements for travel by Jeep.

Cuisine:
The most accessible aspect of the local culture for you will be their food. All food is prepared over a traditional wood fire from organically grown ingredients.
The staple diet here consists of grains such as Rice, Bajra, Jowar, and Naachni, a red millet very rich in iron and other vitamins, is used to make papads and rotis. Varai, a white millet, is also used to make rotis.
Popular local dishes: include Waal ka Varun, Deshi chicken, Gevada (made with groundnuts), Danda (made from a local variety of pumpkin), and Vade (a spicy gravy made using dried channa flour) all served with home-made pickles.

Accommodation:
Cottages and Tents.

Interesting things to see and do:

  • Farming, chopping firewood, drawing water from a borewell.
  • Bazaar Haats (local rural markets).
  • Trekking through gentle forests and more arduous climbs – Harishchandragadh, Mt. Kalsubai.
  • Bird Watching – Rich animal and birdlife – ideal for nature lovers.
